Celebrating our 65th
Birthday
This year, 3rd Warrington East 1st
Culcheth Scouts celebrate our 65th
birthday. For all of this time we have
been offering great opportunities to boys
and girls letting them get the most out of
every-day life. From kayaking to ten-pin
bowling, we have been offering fun and
enjoyment for 65 years and we are going
to for many years to come.
In the 1930’s Scouts in the village
disappeared after being closed down due
to a lack of leaders. For almost 20 years,
Scouting was gone from the streets of the
village. On the 30th August 1949, the
first meeting of the 3rd Warrington 1st
Newchurch Scout group was held
in a small theatre in Newchurch
Hall. Eight months later, we
grew as the Cub Pack began
with six boys headed
by a Cubmistress. This
carried on for about a
year until October 1950
when we moved to Newchurch
Parish Hall and met every Tuesday
evening. This move brought along
with it closer co-operation with the
Guiding movement as well as more cooperation with the Church as the Cubs
and Scouts joined the monthly parade at
the Parish Church. In the mid 1950’s, we
moved to our own premises on Jackson
Avenue, Culcheth. The centre itself was a
wooden hut (a nissan hut) left over from
the war years. Around the early 1980’s
the name Newchurch was changed to
Culcheth so that it covered the whole of
our village. This consequently changed
our name to 3rd Warrington 1st Culcheth
as it remains today. Soon after, in 1984,
22
we grew by opening the Beaver Scout
group for 6-8 year-olds, and the Beavers,
Cubs and Scouts still run now. The nissan
hut had been our main group building
for 40 years until a new building was
built, still on Jackson Avenue, and was
opened in April 1990. This now acts as
our headquarters today.

The Scouts, as they did in 1950, still meet
every Tuesday evening, the Cub Scouts
meet every Friday, and the Beavers Scouts
also meet on Tuesday.
In my opinion, Scouts is a great adventure
to be part of. Since joining the Beaver
Scouts 8 years ago, I have learnt so many
different skills not only that help me in
particular activities but in everyday life as
well. By joining the 3rd Warrington 1st
Culcheth scout group I made many
more friends which also helped
when I moved up to high school
as I knew a lot more people
there. I think that scouting is
really enjoyable. I think it
is really good to get away
from homework and have
fun. It isn’t just about tying
knots and completing badges;
it’s about having fun, going on
adventures and making friends.
To celebrate our 65th birthday, we
decided to run a competition for the
Scouts, Cubs and Beavers to design a
birthday badge that could be worn by
all of the members in the group. There
were many designs made, each following
a different birthday theme. In the end,
merging some of the different designs
together created the final design of the
badge. We decided on a nice font and
colours that were related to scouting. We
are very proud of the badge and members
of the group all wear this badge on the
