Essential Gardening
For August
Buddleias, Weigela, Penstemon, Berberis
and many evergreens will root easily this
month – Make stem cuttings (ideally
pencil thickness) and about 7-10cm in
length.
Remove lower leaves from the cutting
and insert into compost mixed 50/50
with sharp sand.
Cuttings can be placed in an unheated
propagator or you could use a clear
plastic food container such as an old
strawberry punnet as a cover instead.
Sow Brussel Sprouts now, ready for
next year and keep sowing salad stuff
such as rocket and lettuce at fortnightly
intervals.
Clip back faded blooms of lavender
to ensure that the plants stay nice and
bushy.
(You can use the clippings in a pretty
bowl as an air freshener or you can dry
them and store them in your airing
cupboard/wardrobe to help keep moths
away)
If you’re visiting the beach this summer
why not collect some pretty shells,
pebbles, sea washed glass and /or
driftwood to decorate the garden? Many
of us now have areas of stone in the
garden and these would all add to the
interest, particularly if you have grasses
planted either in the ground or in pots.
We are a charity which provides supported employment for adults: with learning
disabilities, mental health problems, mobility issues and early onset Alzeimers.
The type of jobs we offer are gardening, woodwork, floristry, conservation work, working
in our shop, dealing with customers etc. Some people work one day a week whilst others
come Monday to Friday.
In order to finance our work we rely on: Support from Warrington Social Services,
Charitable trusts, sales of vegetables and plants that we grow, sales of seasonal products
that we make, short courses that we run in subjects like floristry and those for the RHS.
