Jubilee Rotary Club
News
Members of this Club are aware of the
potential for members of the public to be
concerned about donating to a “Newton”
club collecting in Culcheth and the
surrounding villages. This problem
has recently been addressed within the
Club in an attempt to find an alternative
name acceptable to the membership
however, for historical reasons, it has
been decided for the time being, to retain
this name. In short, we were founded by
Newton Rotary Club in their Jubilee year
originally to work alongside that Club
in the Newton-le-Willows, Warrington,
Leigh and Golborne area. Over the years,
we have relocated and are now based at
Birchwood Golf Club, serving the more
clearly defined Culcheth, Birchwood,
Glazebury, Croft and Winwick area
whilst a new Club has been formed at
Golborne.
We are grateful to the Birchwood Golf
Club for accommodating our Club and
to the general public in this area for their
invaluable support over the years. We
can assure everyone donating, that funds
raised through Christmas collections,
the Culcheth Beer Festivals, the Halle
Concerts, the Houghton Weavers
evenings, and in other ways, will be
applied the Rotary Charities and more
specifically to local good causes.
Of course there are International Causes
to be funded. More recently, at Sainsbury’s
we sold over £700 .00 worth of Crocus
lapel badges in pursuit of the Rotary
effort to eradicate Polio Worldwide.
With a like-for-like grant from the Bill &
Malinda Gates Foundation, your money
is doubled to £1400.00 and our task is,
thankfully, a little nearer to completion.
Closer to home, members of the Rotary
Clubs in Bridgewater, Wells and Taunton
worked alongside the emergency services
and other community volunteers when
160,000 acres of the Somerset Levels
were flooded. Sandbags were filled and
positioned and a 150,000 square foot
warehouse was hired for donations
of food, clothing, furniture and other
essentials to be stored for redistribution.
Many Rotary Clubs, ours included, are
now linked to the emergency services.
Rotary can also be fun. Our coconut
shy was well received at the Birchwood
Carnival (see photograph) and will again
support the Croft Carnival on 5th July.
The money raised goes towards Rotary
Charities, but more importantly, this
your Rotary Club letting you know that
we are there and available to assist in the
community. Just ask. All requests will be
considered.!
We need new members. What better way
is there to repay the society which has
given you so many opportunities in life.
Visit the Rotary website and check us
out at District 1280, or contact Bernard
Groom - 01925 733893. Whatever your
age, even newly retired, you will be made
most welcome.
This offer comes with new friends and a
full and active social life.
