DIVERSITY EDUCATION AND CULTURAL PROGRAMMING

DEI education , training , and cultural programming programs are developed to encourage critical thinking and dialogue leading to action from our faculty , staff and students . NWTC ’ s Board of Trustees also participate in monthly educational opportunities to aid in creating a deeper understanding of the lived experiences of our students , employees , and community . These opportunities are rooted in the principles of social justice ( equity , access , participation , and rights ) and cultural competence ( value diversity , understanding and responding to cultural differences , and engage in self-awareness ). DEI education is happening at every level of the organization and takes on many forms at NWTC including facilitated discussions , workshops , guest speakers , and more .
21-Day Racial Equity Habit Building Challenge
For many reasons , the dynamics and impacts of racial inequalities and injustice fall out of awareness . It ’ s critically important that we continue to grow our contemporary and historical perspective by developing awareness of the layers of our own identity and the impacts of race . The Racial Equity Habit Building course consists of daily activities that will challenge you to reflect on the position of race in the historical and current context .
Through the activities you will develop :
• self / other awareness about race
• communication skills about race
• conflict management around issues of race
The intention of this course is to provide resources that will keep the dynamics of oppression in our more immediate awareness in order to keep moving toward racial equity .
A Place at the Table Discussion Series
This is a roundtable event for staff , faculty , and students to have candid , safe , and respectful discussions around serious social topics . ( Topics include , but not limited to : DACA and undocumented students , history of indigenous people and America , use of excessive force .)
Diversity Electives
NWTC currently has approximately 31 diversity and cultural awareness programs offered and supported through Talent Development . These sessions offer faculty and staff a chance to learn more about veterans , disabilities , global issues , and current equity-related matters that impede the growth of ourselves and our students . Members of the Diversity Team have developed a tentative diversity plan for offering electives related to social justice , lesbian , gay , bisexual , transgender and questioning ( LGBTQ ) issues , disability , culture , generational differences , and other topics to help our employees understand the populations they work with and serve . The sessions will also be offered to our students to build a more understanding and inclusive community .
