CREATING INCLUSION AND BELONGING IN THE WORKPLACE

Current Efforts and Data
NWTC is committed to promoting a learning environment where employees and students of differing perspectives and cultural backgrounds pursue career and academic goals embraced in an environment of respect and shared inquiry .
The College seeks to attract ethnically diverse instructors and staff who can inspire our increasingly diverse student population .
Diversity Recruitment and Retention Workgroup
Working on the centralized goal of having an employee population that mirrors its student body , a core team has been assembled to create the framework for creating and sustaining a welcoming environment for diverse staff based on and guided by current staff .
This subcommittee reviews data related to employee experiences to foster and encourage an environment where underrepresented employees are included within the College community and support recruitment and retention strategies .
Equity in Hiring
In August 2020 , a team of employees across every division , level and type came together to charter the Equity in Hiring Team . This aim of this team is to develop an equitable hiring process for NWTC , resulting in measurable and specific progress towards the College ’ s stated goal of decreasing the gap between the percentage of students of color and the percentage of the college workforce of color at all levels . Procedural policies will be developed and implemented for equity in the hiring process that includes job postings , applicant pool requirements , and interview team make-up as well as the interview process through the job offer and onboarding .
Faculty Fellowship
In Spring of 2021 , a team formed to enhance the current Faculty Fellowship model that was created in 2018 . This team is working to create an equitable and appealing posting to attract racially diverse faculty who may not meet our full requirements to teach or are looking for a teaching experience . This team is also creating what the expectations of the Faculty Fellow will be in terms of teaching load / required experience opportunities , mentorship / coaching , college culture , professional development , etc .
A Faculty Fellow will be offered for 1-3 years depending on education / skills needed to become fully qualified for full-time hire . The goal is to help create a well-qualified pool for full-time benefited positions for future openings .
