Go to a show
Don’t panic, you don’t have to participate! Going to a small, local show
can be a really positive experience for a rider that needs to build confidence. You will get an opportunity to familiarise yourself with the
environment, what is expected on show day, and you can also see for
yourself that many riders jump and compete without any major disasters. If you can, take your pony with you! If he is used to the show environment he will be happy to graze by the ring, and seeing him relaxed
can aid in building your trust in him. This trust will be the foundation
upon which you can build confidence together. The show organizers
will also be extremely grateful to have another pair of hands if you feel
like volunteering to pick up poles!
Smile!
If all else fails, plaster on a grin and remind yourself that jumping is
meant to be FUN first and foremost. There is a huge amount of truth
behind the saying; “fake it till you make it”, so pull on that back protector and ride like you have confidence. You may surprise yourself!
