iving in the Middle East, we know very well about the existence
of terrorists—those who intentionally harm innocent victims
who are in the midst of going about their daily lives. The terrorists in Dr. Miriam Adahan’s feature this week are of a different
kind. They may be veteran teachers or business owners, mothers of
small children, husbands who are pillars of the community, or even a
group of sixth grade children who judge one of their classmates to be
inferior in their estimation.
Unfortunately, the practice of judging others because they are
different or haven’t lived up to certain expectations is so widespread
that it’s become acceptable behavior. When a child is branded as
a failure by a teacher or school system, when a young woman is
reduced to the name of the seminar she attends or her dress size, or
a parent resorts to ugly name calling or brutal comparisons, these
acts of terror leave emotional wounds that can, unfortunately, last
a lifetime. And by internalizing these voices of shame, blame, and
unrelenting criticism, many of us may be terrorizing ourselves long
after the terrorist has left the scene.
Tzaddikim say that the world is a mirror; the external world
reflects what is happening inside of us. If we can heal and fix what is
broken inside, then that fixing will be reflected in the world outside
of us. If we can stop terrorizing with unfair judgments in words and
actions, if we can turn with love and acceptance towards our children,
our spouses, our students, our fellow Jews, and ourselves, we will see
a dramatic change for the good in our own immediate world and
perhaps even in the world beyond.
