If the government were to seriously include sustainable fuels in its future plans for reducing the use of fossil fuels, what would be the next step?‘ Then we’ d need to scale up the production for economies of scale.’ Can it be produced in great enough quantities to really make an impact?‘ The main benefit biofuel has over synthetic fuels is that it is genuinely and more widely scalable. One method would be to use the existing refineries and economies put in place over the 160-year history of the oil industry. Many of the technologies we’ re exploring in sustainable fuels, in theory, could be bolted on or used in adapted refineries on a large-scale basis. We could then continue to make the essential chemicals we need for everyday life. If we could do this, it would go a long way to reducing the costs of sustainable fuel production.
‘ We must also remember that a substantial proportion of
the price we pay at the pump is made up of fuel duty as well as VAT, so that’ s another way the government could provide support.’ Which only seems fair, given the tax breaks and incentives that other, just as viable, environmentally conscious transport solutions have received.
Let’ s not be naive and think that biofuels are the answer to all modern mobility. But along with electric, hybrid, or even hydrogen-fuelled vehicles, biofuel could be part of the shift away from fossil fuels. And rather than just a way to run out an existing fleet of ICE vehicles, Coryton has a range of fuels that could adapt petrol and diesel vehicles to suit future trends and legislation. That would allow ICE vehicles to continue to be used, yes, but also continue to be built. So if by some chance reduce, reuse, recycle and repair wasn’ t your thing, you could still replace.
Specialist engines, like motorsport ones, might need a minor tune to work on Sustain, but nothing more
