Coryton, a company that has supplied advanced fuels to a range of industries including motorsport, aviation, marine, and light and heavy-duty vehicles, might have a solution with its range of Sustain fuels. We spoke to Suresh Nahar, a brand manager for Sustain, to see if it has a solution.‘ From our plant in Essex, which is part of the new Thames Enterprise park and aims to be an energy and food hub, we create 4000 unique blends each year. That’ s more than 14 million litres of bespoke fuels in total, for use across the globe. In recent years, we’ ve been putting more focus on sustainable fuels and how they can help us meet the objectives of the industry.’
Coryton knows fuels, then. Suresh explains exactly what the company’ s sustainable fuels are made from.‘ Our Sustain fuels typically include second-generation biofuels, made from traceable agricultural waste such as straw, by-products or waste from crops or food manufacturing processes that wouldn’ t be used for consumption. Where appropriate, we also produce fuels that utilise sustainable e-fuel technology, which is created in a
chemical process.’ Its range is quite varied.‘ We start with a 33 % sustainable component and go up to 100 %. There’ s 98-99 RON to 107, and ethanol-free to E85 fuels. We offer both gasoline and diesel. There really isn’ t an engine we can’ t serve. And if you cannot find something that works in the marketed range, we produce 4000 bespoke blends a year for a variety of applications.’ There’ s a lot of talk about fully synthetic fuels at the moment, what’ s different about Sustain and what makes it better than a synthetic fuel?‘ Synthetic fuels are created from non-biological feedstocks, often through chemical processes like Fischer-Tropsch synthesis.’ That process involves 150 to 300 ° C temperatures, high pressures and metal catalysts to convert carbon monoxide and hydrogen into a synthetic liquid hydrocarbon.‘ Whilst some synthetic fuels are sustainable,
