The many forms that the Twin-Cam was offered in also included a turbocharged version
over 1650rpm, was the very first production car engine with variable valve timing. Alfa updated the system in 1983 from a centrifugally-activated system to an electromechanical one.
That engine produced 128hp, small compared to the sort of figures available from early, less complex engines built to a fast road spec. It’ s these sort of engines that Paul builds a lot.‘ They make great fast road engines. If you take a 2-litre, for instance, we’ ve got a fast road package now that we do. We know what works and what doesn’ t work. A decent fast road spec engine, that is manageable on the road, you’ ve got 155, 160hp. That’ s the limit for a fast road spec engine before it comes a bit fussy. A race spec two litre on a pair of 45 DCOEs is probably about 190hp.
