EDITORIAL
I
’ ve built just one engine in my life. A 2-litre four-cylinder BMW M10 for my 1971 2002. That’ s not a great boast as the editor of a magazine titled The Engine Rebuilder, I know. I might have had a couple of goes at taking the head apart as I never had it skimmed the first time and it blew a head gasket – we all have to learn somewhere – but I can only lay claim to one engine.
Perhaps, even worse, when I wanted a more powerful motor for my car – one with custom forged pistons, a hotter cam, that sort of thing – I relinquished the responsibility and paid someone else to build it. I couldn’ t afford to make another fundamental mistake. Not after I’ d spent so much on glitzy power-enhancing chunks of metal. Wonderfully engineered chunks of metal, that is.
You see, I am aware of where my skills lie. While I might know how to lap valves and check piston ring gaps, I am no expert engine builder. Making magazines is what I do. It’ s you, the readers who have the deep in-depth answers to the tricky engine-related questions. What I need to do, what I will be doing with The Engine Rebuilder, is find the right people to ask those questions to. Just like getting the right person to build an engine, you need an expert.
