The Endangered and the Extinct Nov. 2013 | Page 5

One of the main reasons of black rhino endangerment is because of poaching. There are also other reasons, like deforestion resulting in lose of habitat, pollution to the water, acid rain and many more.

Since 1970, the number of black rhinos have started to decline due to poaching.

Rhinos are being hunted for their horns, which is famous for being used in medicine and as daggers

Rhinos are also poached because their horns are very valuable, and they can be sold at a really high price in certain countries.

Poaching laws are very strict, but poachers still manage to get to the rhinos. If this continues, the rhino species will be eradicated in a few years.

In 1961 the organication WWF started to take notice of the black rhino and started a campain to save the black rhinos from the edge of extinction.

Conservations have helped the total number of black rhinos from 2410 in 1995 to 4880 in 2010. This is a dramatic chage because the chance of the black rhino being extinct is limiting.
