College was something that was instilled in me growing up. However, having a
brother with a disability made things financially, mentally, and physically
challenging for my family. There were times his medical insurance would not cover
his medical costs and this put a strain on our family financially. This happened
around the time I was getting ready to graduate college. I applied to so many
scholarships because that was going to be the only way I could afford college and
having to work. Fortunately, I received several scholarships that not only covered my
college tuition but helped me and my family live comfortably (burden-free) and
opened up so many opportunities for me professionally and personally. I joined KDChi
as soon as I could and it was the best decision of my life. Sxsters were there to
support me through every hardship with my family and as a colored women in STEM.
During my college experience, there were several male professors in my engineering
classes that told me I would never make it as an engineer. Through the help of my
parents and sxsters, I was able to prove them wrong and come out stronger than they
thought. Now that I'm graduated, I know that this is only the surface of what I can
do. I hope to use my education and engineering experience to provide the disabled
community with the medical equipment they need on a daily basis to make their life
more comfortable.
