ADELA DE LA TORRE
LATINO HONOR SOCIETY
Congratulations to Raquel Bueno, Maria Gomez, and Giovanny Valadez for
being inducted into the Adele De La Torre Latino Honor Society at Northern
Illinois University! We are so proud to see our sisters thriving for excellence
and being recognized for their academics and extracurricular activities.
My name is Raquel Bueno (Fall 2017, Alpha Class), and I
am the President of the Beta Upsilon Chapter at Northern
Illinois University. I am a Nursing Major, and will be
graduating this upcoming May with my BSN. This
semester, I had the privilege of being inducted into Adela
De La Torre Latino Honor Society, which has a mission to
recognize and achieve excellence amongst Latinos on
campus. I am a first-generation student who aspires to
become an OB nurse in the near future. Growing up, my
parents always instilled in me the importance of pursing a
higher education. Leaving away for college was very hard
for me, because I would be leaving my family behind in
hopes of having a better future.
While trying to find my place on campus, I met the
Charters of Kappa Delta Chi Sorority, Inc., whom were
extremely welcoming and made me feel at home. Soon

enough, I joined KDChi which has given me confidence,
and has allowed me to further develop my inner
leadership skills. Through my involvement in our
sisterhood, I was also able to also apply for Order of
Omega, which is a National Honor Society for Greek-
lettered organization. Without our sisterhood to push me

out of my comfort zone, I wouldn’t be where I am today,
and for that I will forever be grateful.
