Latin students bring new sorority, fraternity to K-State

By: Stephanie Casanova, The Mercury

When Yulisa Enriquez was a freshman at K-State, she looked into joining a sorority only to find that there weren’t many diverse options.

There was one Latina sorority on campus, Sigma Lambda Gamma, but she wasn’t sure she wanted to join. Her older sister was part of Kappa Delta Chi, a multicultural sorority, at Emporia State.

“I felt like I didn’t really have a group I fit in with really well, and I really did want to be part of greek life and especially keep on that legacy that my sister was also in,” Enriquez said.

Instead of joining an existing sorority, Enriquez decided to bring Kappa Delta Chi to K-State. Now going into her junior year, she’s the president of the sorority, which initiated 13 members in April.

Unsure how to start a sorority on campus, Enriquez sought advice from an older friend. She talked to other Latina women, and they showed interest in the idea. She soon realized she needed to act on the idea, instead of just talking about it.

“I know for a while I would think about it and talk about it, but nothing really went through,” she said. “And so I started taking action.”
