Chapter Sister Joins Women's
Global Connection
WGC is beyond excited to introduce new staff member Claudia Guzman Garcia, who really isn’t new here at all. She has been a WGC volunteer since 2012 and now will serve as Associate Director of Community Engagement and Economic Development.
Claudia recently received her PhD in Leadership Studies from Our Lady of the Lake University. She’s been a WGC Advisory Chair for the Girls Leadership/Girls Global Summit Program and also worked as a WGC grant writer last year.
She’s also worked in development with Girl Scouts of Southwest Texas and on grant administration for the UTSA Vice President for Research.
Please help us welcome Claudia!

How Did She Do That?!
Hello Sisters! I’m Selena from the Beta Epsilon chapter! This summer I interned for the White House Initiative on Educational Excellence for Hispanics (WHIEEH) at the U.S. Department of Education. It has been nothing short of amazing and truly life changing! I worked alongside
the Presidents Advisory Commission and a national network of community leaders where I provided input on the education policies at hand that impact the Hispanic community. I had
the opportunity to sit down with the Secretary of Education, Betsy DeVos, and collectively
brought to the table topics that matter - especially for Latinxs. During my time in D.C. I was
invited to the Latina Leaders Summit by The Hill Latino, where I got to meet so many
amazing womxn from all over the country and got to interact with the Top 3 Highest Ranked
Latina CEO’s! I was able to see Justice Sotomayor at the Supreme Court! I also got to be a
student speaker at the National Association for the Education of Young Children at their
National Policy Conference! Since the internship was through a Federal Agency, it was
unpaid. However my university has a program in which they assist you with any internship
related issues. I qualified for the program and was able to get my internship completely
funded! My internship was in Washington D.C. so I had to move from Florida up to the Capitol.
This internship has been the latest of many, but definitely my best one yet! What would I do differently? Remind myself that on some days I am allowed to just go home and rest. I say that because everyday after work I got caught up in the fact that I was in a new city with so much to see, that I would spend my days in museums, trying new cafes, exploring the state nearby, visiting memorials, going to jazz festivals, attending conferences, etc. I would feel exhausted often. Though now looking back I’m glad I did everything I wanted, but I know that exhausting myself mentally and physically is not good.
If you’d like any info on the WHIEEH internship, Department of Ed opportunities, or any recommendations in D.C. reach out to me! I’d love to see more sisters in the Capitol!
We all hear it from day one.
You need an internship.
Don't forget about the all important internship.
Have you looked at internships?
You can't graduate without an internship!
How will you find a job without an internship?!
It can all be very daunting and downright overwhelming. Read on to here about the good, the bad and the down right ugly things that can come out of the internship experience. And hopefully a few lessons we cal all learn.
