Five Women Start Texas Legislature's First LGBTQ Caucus

For example, Johnson became the first lawmaker whose same-sex spouse was invited to join the Legislative Ladies Club, a social group made up of the husbands and wives of Texas House members.

"If you would have told me that we would have five LGBTQ members in the Texas Legislature, I would have never believed you," Mary González said Thursday. "And all women, and all in the House."

We are making history at the Texas House of Representatives. As of last week, Reps. Celia Israel, Jessica González, Julie Johnson, and Erin Zwiener and I will serve as the founding members of the LGBTQ Caucus.

Our priorities include drafting legislation that protects underrepresented communities and strengthens our state's economy. Membership to the caucus is open to all; we are excited to welcome other members focused on ushering in inclusive legislation.
