WELCOME

Winterbourne Opera would like to extend a very warm welcome to you to our fifteenth
summer production and hope you will enjoy our interpretation of Donizetti’s comic opera.
After the huge success of Carmen last year we are delighted to be back in the Cattle Ring with
The Elixir of Love. For many, this opera will be a nostalgic trip back to the summer of 1962, the
heady post-war world, the innocent fun, and the excitement of holiday time. For those of you too
young to remember the sixties, it will be an insight into the simple pleasure of that new age!
We are transporting you to a seaside holiday camp,
where Hi-de-Hi! meets opera, with happy campers
having fun, romance, laughter and song, all whipped up
into a spin by the arrival of a larger than life fraudster!
Our founding vision remains crucial to our productions:
to provide opportunities for young singers and
musicians in a nurturing environment whilst making
opera accessible for everyone. Carmen achieved this on
an unprecedented scale, and we look forward to building
on that success.
This year our Musical Director brings with him a young
professional orchestra, and with our fantastic cast of
young soloists and singers alongside Winterbourne
chorus, and our inspired creative team we promise
fabulous music and imaginative and original
entertainment.
None of this would be achievable without the
kindness of many people. We are extremely grateful to
the directors of Southern Counties and Netherhampton
Salerooms for giving us a fantastic performing space,
and thank them, and their staff, for making us feel so
welcome. We would also like to thank those individuals
who have generously sponsored our singers and
musicians, our loyal Friends and all those who have
helped and supported us in a great variety of ways.
