The Edmonton Muse October 2018 | Page 62

I was not able to find much about Wilson online. Her website does not have a bio, only photos and a few videos. It appears that is hasn't been updated recently but this is about her music, not her web page.

The four track EP came out in 2017 and though there are no longer notes indicating studio, players, writers or producer, the recording itself does have good production. The players are more than adequate , one gets the feeling they are seasoned session guys. The first three tracks have the same type of message. The singer isn't going to put up with much from her guy and will get even or get lost. The melodies for all three are upbeat and very danceable. Wilson’s vocals though not as strong as some, don’t shy away from attacking the lyrics. She occasionally shows gravel in her voice that when the guys use it, has the girls a little weak in the knees (so my wife tells me). Wilson doesn’t over use it, but fits it in the right spot for emphasis. You get the feeling that she us looking to someone like Miranda Lambert, Gretchen Wilson or similar artists as a model or template as to where she wants to go. I am not sure she gets there, at the same time she is just starting out.

The last track on the disc, Too Soon, is obviously written about a tragic event in her life, the loss of her Father. The liner gives him credit for the final push for Wilson to follow her dreams, ending with may he rest in peace. Too Soon is one of those tunes we can all relate to. I lost my Mother when she was 57 and I can see myself saying everything she vocalizes. It’s a slower tune that likely falls more in Wilson’s wheelhouse.

As a debut EP, it’s better than some and not quite as good as others. Next to the heartfelt ode to her Dad, my pick on this disc is Track 1, Deal Breaker. It has a solid beat that will help you spin around the dance floor. The harmonies are excellent and that gravel I spoke about earlier appears here in all the right spots.

Three out of five mics, stars, thumbs up, whatever symbol you want to place here.
