Our artist of the month for April is Olivia Kain. A 15 year old girl, with a passion for the fine arts, a lot of drive and the talent to get her where she wants to be.
Meeting Olivia was great. She was shy and nervous at first, as anyone being interviewed and put on the spot would be, but it wasn't long before she was able to convey her answers to my drilling questions with ease and excitement. Her passion for art has been a lifelong journey so far, but she really didn't discover her true talent for it until she was in grade 6.
"It was actually because of a friend of mine. She drew anime style characters and that was something I have never seen before. So I went to my desk and kept trying to copy it. Over and over again to just get better at it. ... Then eventually I was like, I should change up the hair. Then I would change the eyes... I just kept picking things up from other people until I was able to create my own style"
Some of her biggest influences and inspirations come from wanting to put her thoughts on paper and into drawings while listenting to her favorite classical composer, Michael Sweeney.
"I find that you can just kind of pick up things in the music that help create the drawings. I know that a lot of artists put a lot of emotion and messages into their art but I find with my style, I can't really get my emotions across a lot of the time. I just like drawing whatever I think looks nice. I like drawing anything that I think looks pretty I want to create art that is enjoyable for people and make them want to buy it."
Olivia also explores many mediums and is very open minded and eager to learn and explore as many different syles as she can.
"I really like painting. I prefer watercolor as it is easier to fix and is more forgiving than acrylic is. But I usually use pencil and paper. I have been doing a lot on the computer too. I don't like making a drawing from start to finish digitally though. I like having it on paper and then transfering it over. Then doing the line art and coloring from there."
Olivia currently attends Victoria Composite, with goals of attending the University of Alberta to pursue her career in Fine Arts.
We asked Olivia to offer some advice to new and aspiring artists. She said, "I would say just, don't stop drawing. Just because it might not look the best or be the best peice you have ever done, I would say, keep going. You are only going to get better."
Olivia was a pleasure to be around. Her energy and enthusiasm comes in leaps and bounds. It is very encouraging to be around her positive outlooks and even more so with her forseeable goals. She knows what she wants and is working very hard to achieve it. I would keep an eye on her in the future because this girl is goin places!!
