Rant: The Education System

Hashim Dabbas

The education system judges a person based on their ability to write information on paper, but what it doesn’t do is attempt to see if that student actually understands what they are being tested on rather than regurgitating what they have memorized.

These exams test specific parts of one’s knowledge. They focus on certain components over others, even though all are important. This imbalance causes certain students to soar above others. It doesn’t allow students to show their true colors and understandings of a subject, but instead penalizes them for not understanding what they deem to be “standard”.

To add to that, these standards are not fit for all students, for each one of them is a unique human being who has their own strengths and weaknesses. Some are amazing presenters while others are creative writers, artists, and thinkers. Instead of standardizing students and making them conform to a certain test, educational systems should allow students to present what they have learnt from their courses using methods they are comfortable with, allowing them to show what they are truly capable of. The evolution of technology has allowed us to reach a higher plane of existence, deeming spewing out data useless because, in the real world, we live with all the information we need at our finger tips.

As I don’t wish to offend any educational organizations, I will stop here, although I would love to go on for another hour or two. Nevertheless, I just wanted to go on a little rave with exams week on the horizon, and to allow readers to dwell on the subject. Hope all of you have a “great” time studying for finals.

With exam season coming up, I wanted to rant about the global standardized testing system:
