SALEM - The average American produces 4.5 pounds of garbage per day. If a person lives to be 80 years old
that is 131,400 pounds of garbage in their lifetime! There are 314 million people in the United States and if
everyone lives to be 80 years old that is a lot of garbage that has to be stored in landfills or incinerated.
Amy Maxwell’s Environmental Science class at Salem Central School examined the issues surrounding garbage
by reading articles, watching and discussing the movie Wall-E and projects. The final project for the unit was a
design challenge. Students had to take materials that would be recycled or thrown away and make a toy or game
for elementary aged students. On January 7, 2016 students took their projects to the first grade classrooms to
be tested. Both groups of students had fun and were inspired by the event.
Garbage is an important issue for our planet. Innovative solutions are needed to solve our garbage problems
and maybe Salem Central School students will discover new ways to deal with our garbage problems in the
future.
