SALEM – Recently, Mrs. Parker’s first grade class was visited by some very ingenious high school
students. The students were from Mrs. Maxwell’s Environmental Science class. The Environmental
Science class had completed a unit on garbage. According to the Environmental Protection Agency’s
website, Mrs. Maxwell’s students found that every American produces an average of 4+ pounds of
garbage per day. After much discussion on ways to reduce this staggering number, they were given a
project. The goal of the project was to look at garbage and recyclable materials differently. These inventive students decided to make toys out of recyclable materials. Utilizing common recyclables that
would have ended up in the trash, they created an egg tree house, a pull toy car, a pull toy Wall E, can
people, parachute men and binoculars. All were great ideas… but the true test would be if kids enjoyed
playing with them. In collaboration with elementary teacher Mrs. Stacy Parker, the Environmental Science class took their creations to the first grade class to be tested. Results were that the 1st grade students
enjoyed the handiworks of the high school students. Congratulations to the Environmental Science
class for a job well done! It is essential that everyone makes a conscientious effort to help reduce the
amount of garbage thrown out.
