SALEM - Salem Central School third grade students recently studied American artist/sculptor Dale Chihuly during
their art classes. Mr. Chihuly is famous for his fabulous and unique work in glassblowing. Mrs. Slavin, Art teacher,
discussed with her 3rd graders how artist Chihuly created bell-like shapes out of glass in bright dazzling colors. The
shapes he designed were reminiscent of certain flowers. He called this exhibit “Macchia” which means spotted or
stained in Italian. Equipped with this knowledge, Mrs. Slavin’s students started to create their own Macchias . They
thought about what colors to use since they were to use warm and cool colors and the different layouts they would
utilize. When they were done planning, they were given a white coffee filter and washable markers to start their
designs. They generated their ideas on the coffee filter completely covering the entire filter. They then sprinkle a small
amount of salt over the filter, and spray their creations with water. The students then put the macchias over a bottle to
dry to create the bulb-like shape. When they were dry, the filters were glued on a black background. The results were
simply amazing and each one was exceptional and unique. What a delightful way to learn about Mr. Chihuly!
