We saddled the horses and mounted up. Everyone
exchanged a final set of looks. Those looks were all we had to
give each other. It was the only thing we could muster; a silent
goodbye. It was right there and then where I did the one thing I
told myself I couldn’t do. I gave in to myself. I was afraid. For
myself. For my wife. For my infant son. Because if my time in the
army had taught me one thing, it’s that war never changes.
