The silence continued. A small nod from him
was all that was needed. We gathered our last bit of
hope and arose from the dusty floor. Everything stood
still for a second as the door creaked open with the
sound of rusty steel scraping against even rustier
steel. As we left the bunker the surrounding area
stood still. A piece of debris floated past us, playing in
the wind. A couple of the horses neighed quietly as
the loud machine gun fire slowly died out. It was
completely silent except for the small gust of wind
whistling past us. The calm I had retained inside was
no longer present. As we untied the horses that were
tied to the metal poles, I felt something that was very
similar to fear. I once again found myself trying to
gather any piece of strength I had left, any amount of
courage. I quickly realized that there was no strength
to be found.
