THE DOPPLER EFFECT
For nearly a decade, we have been helping guide
enterprise customers through their cloud trans-
formations. Over those years, we have seen busi-
nesses struggle with a consistent set of challenges
in their cloud journey, and we have created pre-
scriptive solutions to help customers overcome
these issues and move their projects forward with
confidence. As with any disruptive technology,
cloud brings fundamental changes to how enter-
prises must approach their technology stack, their
people and processes and the economics of their
businesses. Time and time again, we see that the
one root cause spanning all these domains, that is
more destructive than any other to the success of
a cloud transformation, is the failure to have a
commonly shared and comprehensive definition
of what cloud is and why you are "doing" cloud.
This edition of The Doppler Quarterly explores
what cloud means for your business and how best
to harness its transformational power. In our aptly
titled article “How Do You Define ‘Cloud’?” on
page 6, we explore how the most successful IT
leaders view cloud, not through a technology lens,
and not as a destination, but as a truly new way of
doing things.
When you think about cloud, consider your
answers to key questions that get to the heart of
what cloud really is:
• When your developers want to provision
services on demand, can they do so auto-
matically – without the need to fill out a
help desk ticket?
• Do your CISO and governance, risk and
compliance (GRC) teams not only support
your cloud transformation but advocate
moving even faster?
• Are you using the truly transformative ser-
vices cloud platforms offer today, or did you
simply lift and shift VMs out of your data
center into AWS, Azure and/or Google?
• Are you paying only for what you use -- not
just with AWS, Azure and/or Google -- but
with your SaaS applications AND even with
your on-premises hardware?
When you approach cloud with the right perspec-
tive, and implement proven best practices and
methodologies for a streamlined cloud transfor-
mation program, your company will achieve the
greatest benefits, with the least risk and fastest
time to value.
On page 12, Alexey Gerasimov, VP of Global Cloud
Delivery, shares his views on “How to Get Cloud
Right” -- starting with a common definition of
what cloud means for your business. Finally, on
page 46, Robert Christiansen, VP, Cloud Strate-
gist, provides an update to our popular “The
Cloud Adoption Blueprint: 10 Best Practices for
Success,” first published in the summer of 2016. It
is worth noting that the best practices we defined
three years ago are still largely unchanged -- a
testament to how challenging a cloud mindshift
can be, and how critical it is to get the fundamen-
tals right. Educating your teams on how they
should be approaching cloud from the onset will
better empower your people to lean into a cloud
initiative, kickstart innovation and accelerate time
to value for your business.
