Now, let us investigate what determines the desired migration pattern for a specific application. The Platform Suitability and Migration Pattern Approach Before looking at all of the characteristics of an application and digging deep to determine suitability and the appropriate pattern, there are other factors that should be considered. These include general strategy, roadmap and business drivers, which play important roles in such decisions. The general approach we recommend is to conduct a high-level assessment across the application portfolio in order to develop rationalization themes and align with the overall strategy. This can then be further developed by detailed application assessments with a view toward prioritization and schedule order- ing, based on various factors such as the need to demonstrate quick wins or external schedule constraints. We have developed a data model and assess- ment methodology as part of our Application Assessment and Migration frame- work that allows for accelerated assessments. This framework defines what data sets are needed at what stage of the assessments, how to capture the rel- evant information using various sources (CMDB, discovery and dependency mapping tools, code scan software, etc.) and how to consume all the information.
