Estate & Trusts and Civil Mediation
court deadlines, and phone calls, I find I return to my work more present and centered.
• Practicing simple breathing techniques or mindfulness exercises before court or after depositions. Even just a few minutes of deep breathing can help regulate my stress levels and prevent emotional buildup from spilling into the next task or interaction.

• Choosing meals that nourish rather than deplete. I’ ve learned that how I eat directly impacts how I feel. I try to stay mindful about fueling my body with food that gives me energy instead of leaving me sluggish or bloated.
• Watching a favorite show or calling a friend who brings peace. Escaping into a good series or laughing with someone who“ gets me” helps lift the emotional heaviness that can build up over a long week. Connection is a huge part of healing, even if it’ s just through a quick phone call.
• Saying“ no” to unnecessary obligations and“ yes” to things that refill my cup. Setting boundaries was one of the hardest but most necessary forms of self-care I had to learn. Whether that’ s skipping a networking event I don’ t have the bandwidth for or declining a favor that stretches me too thin, protecting my time has helped me show up more fully when it really matters.
What I’ ve realized— and what I urge my colleagues to consider— is that self-care is not a retreat from the work. It is preparation for it. When we neglect ourselves, we reduce our effectiveness. We dull our creativity. We increase our risk of burnout, compassion fatigue, and even ethical missteps.
It begins with us. It begins with recognizing that being a great attorney doesn’ t require sacrificing your humanity. You can be competent and compassionate. Assertive and emotionally aware. Strategic and still spiritually grounded.
Self-Care Awareness Month is a reminder— not a resolution. It’ s not about achieving perfection but about practicing intention. For attorneys, that might mean scheduling that overdue physical, blocking off a quiet morning, or simply choosing to stop glorifying overwork. It might mean allowing ourselves to say:“ I matter, too.”
As someone who had to unlearn a deeply rooted belief that selfcare is selfish, I now say with full confidence: the healthiest version of you is the most powerful advocate you can be— for your clients, your community, and yourself.
Let this September be the start— not the exception— of a more sustainable, balanced legal journey.
