Thankfully , the book also provides some thoughts on tools to stay in balance . Dr . Lembke gives evidence that for most addictions , the brain will come back into balance if we fast from our dopamine stimuli of choice for a minimum of 30 days . The worse the addiction , the worse this rebalancing will feel . But after that time period , dopamine levels in the brain will return to equilibrium and the grip of addiction will loosen . She also talks about the power of being honest in fighting addiction . There is evidence that telling the truth strengthens the prefrontal cortex in a way that improves our ability to resist temptation .
In sum , understanding how the dopamine system works has major implications for our profession , our families , and ourselves . I highly recommend this book .
