CAMPING

CAMPING

Continued from Page 13 we set up camp in a woodsy spot nestled among the trees , unhitched our Covid Camper , leveled it up , connected the water and electric , unfurled the awning , rolled out the dinette slide , unfolded the tent bed ends , and switched on the air conditioning . Then we all piled in for a reprieve from the hammering heat and humidity . Our camping experiences have certainly improved with all these new creature comforts . As the sun began to set , we pulled out the propane stove and prepared a classic camp dinner of potatoes with sausage and peppers . Later , we gathered wood and started a roaring fire to continue our evening , roasting some delicious s ’ mores while sharing engaging stories , jokes and odd happenings . There is nothing quite like a campfire to bring people together . When the embers began to smolder , we cleaned up our campsite and settled in for our first night – dozing off to sleep to the subtle sounds of chirping crickets and hooting owls amidst the darkness .
In the morning , we awoke to the singsong melody of birds announcing the sunrise . After brewing some coffee , we embarked upon our hiking journey through the forest where we spotted several rambunctious squirrels , a soaring fish hawk , deer frolicking , and an alligator lounging on the banks of the calm lake . An old wooden pier stretched out into the water where we sat down to enjoy the view . Off in the distance , we observed the lakeside picnic park where we would break for lunch . Having refreshed ourselves on sandwiches and bottled water , we were ready to cool off on the lake . My wife and I readied our kayaks while our teenage son inflated his paddleboard . Then we pushed off and charted a course around the shaded side of the lake , drifting lazily back with the wind . As evening approached , we walked back to the campsite for dinner over another blazing campfire under the starlit sky . It was peaceful . That is until a giant , flying bug swooped by my wife ’ s head . She entertained us by dancing around the firelight and swatting violently at the air with her shoe . Panting but victorious , she poked at the stunned bug and congratulated herself on her hunting prowess before plunking back down

into her camp chair as our son and I rolled in laughter .
The next day , my son and I began a mountain biking trek on a lesser traveled trail . The meandering terrain was rough and rugged . Soon my son was leading , and I could hear him far ahead yelling back “ Dad , are you okay ?” “ Oh yeah , I ’ m doing fine ,” I replied . But , I was struggling to keep up . As my heartbeat raced and I gasped for air , I quickly asked “ How about we take a water break ?” He said , “ Sure , in just a bit . We ’ re almost to the quarter-way marker !” “ Seriously ?!” I exclaimed . Clearly , my desk job hadn ’ t trained me for this course , but I was appreciating the occasion with my son .
The following day , we ventured into town for some antique shopping and leisurely site seeing , social distancing and wearing our covid masks . Majestic oak trees lined the cobblestone main street . At the end of the block was a tiny shack from which the aroma of smoky goodness billowed . Continuing our tasting tour of local BBQ joints , we located a park bench and savored take-out barbeque ribs with baked beans . Strolling a little farther , we came upon an ice cream parlor and had chocolate sundaes for dessert . Lastly , there was space for a relaxing afternoon nap in a hammock under the tree canopy .
On departure day , we packed up the RV Camper and headed home . Throughout all of our family camping adventures , we ’ ve learned the importance of spending quality time together . No camping trip is perfect . During the pandemic , we ’ ve adapted to many changing circumstances , including our son starting college . Go Gators ! The years of camping memories we ’ ve made with him are precious . And I ’ m grateful for having prioritized the time to value him and influence his life , recognizing there may not be as many family vacation opportunities as he grows older . In the meantime , we embrace the moment and treasure life ’ s journey together in our Covid Camper .
