SOLO PRACTITIONERS
MENTAL HEALTH
Continued from Page 15 simple , this method seems to work for most people . A study in the British Journal of Health Psychology found that 91 % people who wrote when and where they would exercise followed through , compared to 35 % in a control group and 38 % who were only given motivational material .
Finally , I set if-then intentions for the parade of excuses I conjure . For instance , “ If I say to myself I ’ m too tired , I will do one push up .” If I prepare a response to every excuse , then I am more likely to move forward .
My second domino is meditation . Since I learned about meditation in college , I have had some form of meditation practice . When I push off this practice , there is a clear , negative shift in my mood . I ’ m no guru , but many resources exist to help all levels learn the practice . I ’ ve used various apps to help me over the years ( 10 % Happier , Waking Up , Buddhify , Headspace ). I have found these apps helpful , and research does support the efficacy of meditation apps for professionals . For instance , in JMIR mHealth and uHealth , three months after physicians used a meditation app for 30 days , they exhibited a 57 % decrease in anxiety scores , a 50 % decrease in cynicism , and a 20 % decrease in emotional exhaustion . Speaking from personal experience , all lawyers — and particularly solo practitioners — could use these gains .
My third domino habit is keeping a gratitude journal . I write about the little things that I am grateful for each day . It ’ s straightforward : I ’ m grateful for O & A coffee on Main Street . I ’ m grateful for the trees at Selby Garden . I ’ m grateful for the documentary Man on Wire . And on and on .
Keeping a journal like this does three things for me . First , it primes me to look for little delights in life . Second , it collects these little experiences to revisit on tough days . Third , it lets me reflect on the experiences I enjoy most , so I can make sure I ’ m not forgetting something I could fit in my life but have forgotten about in the rush of practicing law .
If I knock down these dominos , I believe I put myself in the best position to be successful in solo practice . I hope one or all of these practices help support your health , so you can support your clients .

The SCBA Council was the first to embrace the project and Erin Christy , Jennifer Grosso , and Amanda Kison have been planning to unveil the paintings at an event where “ Lift Every Voice and Sing ” will be performed by the nationally acclaimed Westcoast Black Theatre Troupe . Sadly , the pandemic has forced a delay of the launch of this project . The paintings are now scheduled to be unveiled at the Bar ’ s statewide convention in June 2021 and Sarasota can look forward to this program and the arrival of the portraits in the Fall of 2021 .

BENTLEY
Continued from Page 13 performed . His concern is that “ technology , technology , technology ” will reduce lawyers to commodities .
Morgan has met a number of characters in his 28 years of practicing law . Morgan specifically recalled a “ lawyer who came to every mediation with a gun in his briefcase ” and a “ lawyer who asked to get on the wireless and started looking at pornography .”
When asked about funny stories involving any local lawyers , Morgan recalled a story when he was new to the practice and was tasked with taking depositions on the east coast with his opponent Norman Vaughan Birch . According to Morgan , Norman “ crushed me like a grape ” only to invite him to go wine tasting until 10 p . m . The next day , Norman was back to crushing him again .
Morgan spoke very highly of the quality lawyers in the SCBA including ( but not limited to ) Ted Eastmoore — who during a series of depositions never asked a question until , at one of the last depositions , asked a single question which was so insightful that it virtually won the case . He fondly recalled his several interactions with each of Charlie Bartlett , Steve Hutton , and Jim Dirmann .
On a personal note , Morgan is proud of his daughter who has inherited her maternal grandfather ’ s artistic skills and of his son who is a 6-foot-3 , 215-pound offensive lineman in ninth grade at ODA .
