able to access . We have fought for and earned political standing at the highest levels of office . Changed policing practices through lobbying and protests . And have increased black representation in media leading to expansion of beauty standards for young children of color .
I said before that the struggle of black Americans has created a culture of resilience and endurance . But I left out that over time , these seemingly endless struggles have bred PROGRESS ! As slow as this progress seems to come , is it not worth it ?
Despite the probable effect , my goal with this article is not to conjure feelings of sympathy or anguish , although I believe those are inevitable feelings when sampling what black culture has endured for decades . Instead , I hope to remind my fellow black Americans and all our allies that what we have accomplished as a community is nothing short of BREATHTAKING ! But remember , comfort breeds complacency . And we ’ ve come too far to stop now . For my readers that cannot relate to these struggles , but understand that when human rights are infringed upon , that inaction could facilitate a form of oppression : I hope this article can provide ideas and encouragement for ways to disrupt the ongoing systems of oppression . Sharing the history of black Americans throughout the year with your children can broaden awareness for future generations to limit the impact and spread of systemic racism , supporting black-owned businesses in your community can close the long-standing wealth gap in this nation , and even placing yourself in uncomfortable situations can help minimize the impact of our own implicit biases . Progress takes community action . And if not you , then who ?
The Young Lawyers Division Needs Your Help !
Come support our local high school students and volunteer to be a scoring judge at the 2023 12th Judicial Circuit High School Mock Trial Competition on February 18th !
This competition allows high school students to interact with real judges and attorneys in a courtroom setting that will help shape their future career path . What better way to
help shape the young lawyers of Florida than by supporting their high school advocacy accomplishments !
We have a great group of students participating this year and need a total of fourteen 12th Circuit attorneys to volunteer .
When Carter G . Woodson established Negro History week in 1926 , he realized the importance of providing a theme to focus the attention of the public . Over the years , the
Association for the Study of African American Life and History ( ASALH ) themes reflect changes in how people of African descent in the U . S . have viewed themselves , the influence of social movements on racial ideologies , and the aspirations of the black community . Photo : ASALH
This will be an approximate 2-hour commitment on the day of the competition only . No advanced preparation required ! Scoring sheets , pencils , instructions , and refreshments will be provided on the day of competition .
