Young women need women who will say,“ You are fearfully and wonderfully made. Now let’ s show the world what that looks like.”

Teaching our daughters to dress with respect

As African American women, we bring something especially powerful to this conversation. Our culture has always expressed beauty through creativity with bold colors, intricate hairstyles, and expressive fashion. But we also carry the weight of stereotypes that have tried to strip us of dignity to the extent of writing laws regarding how we wear our hair. Therefore, teaching our daughters to dress with respect isn’ t about hiding— it’ s about shining without compromise. It’ s about reclaiming beauty on our terms: rooted in worth, not in worldly validation.
Most of all, we must remember that respect starts with how we see ourselves. Respect is not something you demand, it is something you demonstrate. If older women don’ t believe in their beauty, strength, and voice, they cannot pass that truth on to the next generation. Proverbs 31:26 says,“ She opens her mouth with wisdom, and the teaching of kindness is on her tongue.” That’ s the tone we need— not judgment, but joyful guidance. Young women today do not need more rules. They need role models. That might mean hosting intergenerational gatherings, like“ Style & Scripture” nights, where women of all ages explore how clothing and confidence can coexist with holiness and honor. Young women need women who will say,“ You are fearfully and wonderfully made. Now let’ s show the world what that looks like.”
