The Discerner Interview with Celine Gaurier-Joubert The Discerner: “Celine, you are the founder and editorin-chief of The Discerner, but you are also a concert pianist. It is well-known that you run an extremely successful piano studio in Mayfair. Could you tell me more about it?” Celine Gaurier-Joubert: “I have been instructing adult amateur pianists for almost two decades now, in Paris, Switzerland, and London, and I must admit that the piano studio is hugely successful.” The Discerner: “Can anybody join your class?” Celine Gaurier-Joubert: “Yes absolutely! It is open to adults from all walks of life, including lawyers, bankers, doctors, traders, investors or writers who wish to learn how to play the piano, or improve their skills, with a master pianist who specialises in teaching adults. The Discerner: “How does that work?” Celine Gaurier-Joubert: “I would first meet you, for an initial consultation, in order to assess your skills, and discuss your personal goals and wishes. We will then choose a convenient slot for you to attend your weekly lessons.” The Discerner: “What is the structure of the piano course?” Celine Gaurier-Joubert: “I do not work with a set structure as each pianist is different, and requires a specific attention and dedication. I always adapt to the personality and current ability of each of my pupils, and this demands a lot of psychology. I however like being very organised, and always set goals using a result-orientated strategy whilst ensuring that your piano lessons are always varied and enjoyable.” The Discerner: “Which advices would you give to an adult who has never played before, and who thinks that he/she might not be talented, or that it is too late to start?” Celine Gaurier-Joubert: “I would definitely recommend not to be afraid, as I have actually never met an ‘untalented’ individual. Playing the piano is wonderful, and it could only bring joy into your life. It is extremely relaxing too, as it could certainly help relieve stress if you have a highly demanding professional activity. Your lessons will be provided in a non-judgmental environment, so there is nothing to be afraid of. Whatever you have heard in the past, I can confirm that it is never too late to start! The Discerner: “What is the next step if one wishes to start taking piano lessons with you?” Celine Gaurier-Joubert: “Simply email me at [email protected], and I will do my utmost to reply as soon as I can.” 4 THE DISCERN ER/ N OVEMBER 2016 / w w w . thediscerner. com © 2016 The Discerner Ltd.
