devices. Students must be trained in mathematics, electronics and communication. Since the inception of the BMET many changes have come along. Keeping up with the demands of hospitals, clinics, physicians and manufacturers have kept this career alive and have even increased its demand for the career. As the degree plan for the Biomedical Engineering Technologist has changed to stay on top with changes in the medical field, so has the outlook for the students following this career. Although it is only a two-year program, it is somewhat demanding educationally. Students in the Biomedical Engineering Technology degree plan must take physics, electronics, chemistry, anatomy physiology, and higher math besides their general education courses. This may scare away some students looking into pursuing a BMET career. Some students believe they could earn an Electrical Engineering degree studying the same type of classes through a four-year program. Other students find they could attend a technical school and earn an Associate Degree in Biomedical Engineering Technology. While this may be true, the education we are receiving at St. Philips College is one of the best in the state. They should be encouraged and proud that the field they have chosen to pursue is one of prestige and great respect. There are more clinics and hospitals being established and built. The career life of a Biomedical Engineering Technologist will continue to be productive and will be in demand as long as there is people in this world that need healing. As long as, there are patients there will always be the need for BMETs.
As a student myself of Biomedical Engineering Technology, I find that the more I learn about the field, how many directions it can take me, I become more excited about the career I have chosen. I look forward to learning as much as possible in anatomy, electronics and computers to maintain these medical devices. Just as Hippocrates once said “Healing is a matter of time, but sometimes it is a matter of opportunity.” I feel this is my dream, my time, my opportunity. Education in any area takes time; to become a person of character, of integrity, of value is my goal. We all have the chance to make a difference in the life of a person. To help another person medically is my dream, to be able to assist in some form or fashion. I want to be the next best connection which is to support organizations in the healing process of another human being. Following this dream of becoming a Biomedical Engineering Technologist is my way of giving back what was given me…Life.
