President ' s Column
By Stephan Madaus III President
The new year started with a usual degree of capital market volatility. It indicates that the level of uncertainty remains high as does the level of demand for advice. Our Institute assists our members and the broader insolvency community in meeting this demand. The thought leadership and international perspective of our events should provide lawyers and financial advisors as well as judges and policy makers with perspective and ideas that make a difference in their daily work.
We need active members to pursue these goals and fulfil our ambitions. I can only encourage the reader to register for our annual conference in June in beautiful Montreal( registration is open). Bring your spouse! And remember that our conferences are open to
6non-members. If you find it difficult to justify travel in your firm, feel free to give your colleagues a taste of our community.
To ensure that our events remain topical and insightful, III will ask all members to complete a survey in the coming days. We would like to understand what are the‘ hot topics’ in your region or jurisdiction. We would also learn more about your individual perspective regarding our Institute. Do you plan to attend events? Are you interested in joining one of our committees and become more involved? Please take your time and complete the survey.
Based on this survey, we plan to establish permanent working parties under our‘ Thought
Leadership’ umbrella. Similar to existing working parties on the‘ rule in Gibbs’ and‘ cramdown rules in restructuring proceedings’, we will identify additional topics that are of high relevance in developing local case law or are even considered for law reform initiatives. Based on the expertise collected in these working parties, III will be able to better respond to requests for presentations on local conferences and, even more importantly, for feedback to policy papers or law reform draft legislation. Such feedback is not intended to be presented as a position of the III and all of its members. We are aware that such uniformity does not exist. But it will reflect the considerations and advice as formulated by the working party. Utilizing our global perspective and expertise should strengthen the profile of our Institute as an independent global source of unique expertise.
The task of communicating our activities remains a constant one. I would like to take the opportunity to ask the reader to share content on social media when we reach out. We depend on your network. Feel free to share The DII- IGEST and any other post by the Institute. And please take the time to join a virtual quarterly meeting or, even more, one of our in-person events.
I am looking forward to seeing you in Montreal. The annual conference is our key event where you meet many of our members and where you will learn more about latest developments in law reforms, case law and market trends. Please register!
