The Digital Journey
CAD/CAM Technologies in
Prosthodontics
Saturday, 2 June
11:00 – 12:30
Dr. Timo Suojärvi
Managing complex treatments. In prosthetic dentistry, the work in the laboratory has been
in transition towards scanning and digital planning for a long time already. With the ease
of use and dramatically increased accuracy of intraoral scanners, we have also entered
a new era in the clinical reality of prosthodontics. This shift towards digital technologies
in impression taking and CAD design also pushes the production methods towards Computer-
Aided Manufacturing (CAM). In a world where our patients and their teeth (and implants)
are still physical, we must be able to produce the best possible physical end result with
our digital tools. Sometimes we still need working models and analogue production methods
in order to ensure optimal results. The production method of choice also plays a large role
in our material selection. What are the limitations of CAM? How do you decide the appropriate
workflow, method and material in each case? How do you efficiently integrate the best
of both worlds, digital and physical?
You will learn:
• To have an understanding on the current literature on IO scanning.
• To realize the potential of IO scanning in different cases (tooth, implant, emergence, pontic design).
• About the differences of production methods (substractive/additive),
their characteristics and materials available.
• To understand all parties involved in the treatment (patient, dentist, technician) –
even in those chair-side cases where the dentist plays a double role.
About the speaker

is prosthodontist from Helsinki, Finland. He finished his specialisation
programme in prosthodontics and stomatognathic physiology (M.Sc.)
in 2012. He is working as a private practitioner in the centre of Helsinki
and as a senior consulting physician at Helsinki University Central Hospital.
Timo is motivated in implementing novel technological solutions in his
practice and has a vast experience in dental CAD/CAM solutions
and implant planning software. Timo has been involved in organizing
numerous education events in Finland and internationally.
