The easiest way to isolate an area of a
picture is to cut a small square from the
middle of a piece of paper and place the
hole over the area you are trying to
match.
By doing that you only see the colour you are
trying to match - unaffected by what your brain
is seeing around it. Give it a try.
Here, my airbrush tutor is using this method
to match skin tones, so that he can
reproduce them in his finished work.
