US Study Reveals Possible Cause of Premature Births
A
new US study, involving more than 100 pregnant women may have solved the mystery of why many babies are born prematurely. The study published in the US journal Science Translational Medicine pinpointed abnormal calcium deposits in the membranes surrounding the developing foetus as a potential culprit in premature birth, Xinhua news agency reported. The deposits are early markers of bone formation, making the membranes less elastic and more prone to breaking significantly early, according to the study conducted by Ohio-based Nationwide Children’ s Hospital.
“ We do see calcium deposits in full term births as well, which is probably part of the normal breakdown of the membranes at the appropriate time,” Irina Buhimschi, Director of the Center for Perinatal Research at the hospital’ s Research Institute, said in a statement.
Air Pollution on Equator Affects Ozone More
8 The Dayafter November 16-30, 2016
Increase in air pollution in the regions near the equator has led to the formation of more total ozone worldwide, compared to the amount of pollution being emitted, researchers have found.
“ Emissions are growing in places where there is a much greater effect on the formation of ozone,” said lead researcher Jason West, Associate Professor at University of North Carolina adding,“ Our findings suggest that where the world emits is more important than how much it emits.” The reason, a greenhouse gas and toxic air pollutant, is not emitted but forms when ultraviolet light hits nitrogen oxides. When these pollutants interact with more intense sunlight and higher temperatures, the interplay speeds up the chemical reactions that form ozone. The study appears in the online issue of the journal Nature Geoscience.
Machine Learning Can Help Identify Suicidal Behaviour
Using a person’ s spoken or written words, computer technology known as machine learning can help clinicians and caregivers identify with great accuracy whether that person is suicidal or not, according to a new study. These results provide strong evidence for using advanced technology as a decision-support tool to help clinicians and caregivers identify and prevent suicidal behaviour, said the study’ s lead author John Pestian, Professor at Cincinnati Children’ s Hospital Medical Center in Ohio, US.
The study, published in the journal Suicide and Life-Threatening Behavior, showed that machine learning is up to 93 per cent accurate in correctly classifying a suicidal person. For the study, Pestian and his colleagues enrolled 379 patients in the study from emergency departments and inpatient and outpatient centers at three sites.
