SUMMER 2019
LOOKING BACK
It hardly seems possible that we have been doing The
DatebooK for 25 years. We’ve gone from small to large to
medium size and covered “ever so much” in the world of
special events. For this column, I thought it would be fun to
go back to the beginning and see what some of my
comments have been over the years.
In the first few issues I talked about The DatebooK, why we
started the publication and what we hoped to achieve. I
also noted our changes as we added different features. As
we grew we also changed our front cover several times. It
is interesting to see, as I look back, the wide range of
yellows we tried until we finally found the one we all liked.
It was in 1995 that I started my own column and one of my
first “Editor’s Note” was about “Telephone Manners”. At that
time, the electronic world we live in today was in its infancy
so the telephone was how a potential donor made their first
contact with a charity. My one comments was, “This is more
important than you think”. So True!
In another issue my column was entitled “Whose Event Is
This”. My topic was being greeted when arriving at charity
events. You need to make certain that your guests know
exactly what your event is about the moment they arrive.
attention at the start of an evening. Why is there always at
least one table that keeps on talking?
In the Summer of 2007 I talked about The DatebooK Ball,
10 years of great evenings which started first at The Savoy
and later moved to The Dorchester. To this day there are still
people who talk about that event.
For several issues I had a lively debate going on …. “Are we
or are we not going to have a recession”. We know which
side won that debate.
Later issues included topics such as “You cannot teach
special events” - something I continue to discuss - “Are there
too many shows and expos?” - several of which are not with
us any more - and more recently a column on “Brexit and
how it may or may not affect special events.” That is still a
question that no one can answer.
So that brings us today. What will I write about in the future?
Well those of you who know me well know that I always have
something to say.

Other topics I discussed include auctions - how keep them
from becoming boring - and how to successfully get people’s
