Spotlight on: The Futuro House
The Futuro House is a one of a kind venue. Painstakingly restored by artist Craig Barnes, the spaceship style, prefabricated house was designed by Finnish architect Matti Suoronnen in the 1960s and is one of only approximately 60 in existence today. Originating from South Africa, Barnes’ Futuro was dismantled, shipped to the UK and over a period of 18 months, was sympathetically returned to its former glory.
Last September, the venue landed on the terrace of Central Saint Martins College of Art and Design to host a year long series of events to run alongside‘ The Intelligent Optimist’ exhibition and programme.
The vision for the Futuro House is for it to be an active space, open and provocative. Professor Jeremy Till, Head of Central Saint Martins, saw the potential for students and staff to work with ideas of the future in this icon of space age design.
Historically, the sole Futuro house to grace London’ s skyline was aboard a ferry on the Thames in 1968 as part of the houses’ launch at the FinnFocus trade exhibition. The Daily Mail wrote,“ This object, looking like everyone else’ s idea of a flying saucer from outer space, is the Finnish idea of a perfect weekend cottage”.
