SUMMER 2018 Looking Back As we approach The London & UK DatebooK’s Silver Anniversary, I thought it would be fun to look back at some of the things I have written about over the years. However before I do that, I want to introduce you to another new feature we have added …. Memorable Moments. As event organisers, there are many moments that stand out as you look back on many of your events. However we are asking event organisers to pick just one – hard to do – and tell us about it. I hope you will enjoy this new feature. As to what I have written about, well where do I start. I decided to go back to where we began all those years ago and look at my columns. Keeping in mind that like so many in the early 90’s, we were a small enterprise just starting out. One of my first columns was entitled “Whose Event Is This” and it related our experience attending an event when no one was at the door to greet the guests. In fact, there was little or no information about the charity or the purpose of the event. How things have changed over the years …. and for the better.` event. The donor said she had enjoyed herself so much she wanted to say “thank you”. One of my favourite columns was “May I Have Your Attention Please”. How often have you heard that phrase? My comments were about the number of people who go right on talking once the speaker starts. Sadly, we still see that today. “Keep The Fun in Fundraising” Auctions …. One of my favourite topics. My best example is from The DatebooK Ball. I had a terrible time securing an auctioneer for our Ball one year. At practically the last minute, a committee member volunteered one of her guests. I knew nothing about this gentlemen but decided to take a chance. He was just marvellous! He put the “Fun in Fundraising” and the auction was much better than the year before when we had a professional! A tremendous success. The 90’s were tough, while special events as a business grew and developed, but what fun we had! Another column was “You Never Know”. After one function we attended, a person from the charity called me. She wanted me to know that she had just received a cheque for £1,000 from a guest of one of the people attending the Editor: Mary Kay Eyerman, The London & UK Datebook 22c Kew Garden Road, Kew, Richmond, Surrey TW9 3HD Tel: 020 8241 0849 Fax: 020 8241 2508 E-mail: [email protected] Contributing Writers: Richard Fitzwilliams, Claire Derrick, Peter Kerwood, Lynne Warner, Jonathan Byrne, Rachel Brown, Julia Burt, Michèle Marriott, Marianne Gray and Richard Household.
