For a moment , nobody spoke . Then Lita sobbed the names of her lost friends and burst into tears . Grey ’ s knees gave out from under him and he fell to the floor . His plan had failed miserably . And he ’ d lost two more of his new friends . He might as well have murdered them himself .
He was more than ready to fall into despair and just give in then and there . But then Knives said something he didn ’ t quite catch , but nevertheless rang a bell in his head . “ What was that , Knives ?” “ I said Annie knocked her cell door off the frame .
Can you believe it ? Who knew she was so strong ?”
Grey stood again and pressed his face against the bars . He couldn ’ t see that far down , but he could imagine the scene : a cell door like his own , lying on the ground instead of standing in between two cinderblock walls .
And like that , the spark to do something before he lost anyone else was reignited .
She broke her cell door down , he thought . Whether by accident or on purpose , Annie had figured out Nikki ’ s trick with the cell doors . A trick that could quite possibly work for all their doors . A trick that Grey had to figure out now . His life and the lives of Lita and Knives depended on it .
