Now here Callie was face-to-face with her dead abuser . Long-held anger erupted like a volcano , but what caused her even more rage was looking at dead Prissy with hardly a scratch on her . Compared to her little boy , this mother , this inconsiderate selfish woman , hardly had a mark on her . Still beautiful , her long red hair like silk , her arms muscled like she always worked out at some highpriced gym while her son was left with babysitters or , even worse , left alone . “ How could you ?” Callie whispered . “ Look what you did ?” Callie cranked Prissy ’ s head toward the gurney where Sammy lay . “ That ’ s your son in there . You killed him ! You only cared about yourself , like you always did .” Then she smacked the corpse at the back of the head .
Callie felt a flood of rage course through her veins . The “ now ” conjured up the past . Memories of her teen years trying to stay invisible haunted her for much of her life . She ’ d try to keep out of sight so Prissy wouldn ’ t notice her , tried to steer clear of Prissy ’ s friends who imitated her actions so they could stay in her good graces .
Callie heard Prissy ’ s neck crack as she righted it . She then pinched open Prissy ’ s eyelids , glared at her , face to face , nose to nose , as if she were reaching inside her soul . “ Look at me , you stupid bitch !” Those emerald-green eyes with teal chips of color , eyes now almost disappearing inside their sockets , dead eyes now .
