“ Life is about absolutes .” In her London bedroom , a becalmed Mercy sat up and looked across the bed at him as though reading his mind . “ There is no room for doubt .” She left the bed and crossed the floorboards , leaving him fighting for his life . “ I refused to die in a place I was not . The victim I was not . Can you make the same claim , the same rejection ?” She addressed him over her shoulder from the window , looking out into the ageing night .
“ I know- ”
“ No . You expect .” She leaned against the edge of the windowsill and crossing her ankles and her arms studied him from a distance . “ Just because something is possible does not make it guaranteed .”
“ And vice versa ?” He was tired . Needed a short rest . A short rest and he ’ d be fine .
“ Always vice versa .” She half-smiled . “ I never intended to kill you . I could not warn you or prevent it . I am truly sorry .” The smile died on her lips . The eulogy played out in her eyes , once more dark and soulful pools .
“ I know . Just as I never expected to try and kill you .” His words were faint . He tried to inject more volume , but it was unavailable to him .
“ I believe you . How could I not ?” Her mouth upturned into a wry smile . “ How did you get yourself into this position , into the servitude of a vampire ?”
“ I expected this vampire to be like our Sire . I was wrong .”
“ Tell me about your Sire .” “ She was everything it isn ’ t .”
