“ We can ’ t just change her meds . It ’ s not that easy .”
The doctor looked like he just got his driver ’ s license last week . Was this guy really a doctor ? When did I get so old ? His wife ’ s life was in this yahoo ’ s hands and there wasn ’ t anything he could do about it .
“ Then what can we do ?”
“ Coma patients are always tricky . Every single one of them is different . There is no protocol for treatment , each one is unique . We ’ re finding the best course of treatment for your wife and carefully monitoring her progress .”
“ How is that helping her ? She ’ s the same . She ’ s always the same .”
“ Marcus , as I ’ ve said , we ’ re doing everything we can to help her .”
“ It ’ s not enough . It ’ s just not .”
The doctor was quiet , the paperwork in his hands forgotten , gaze finding the floor .
That ’ s when Marcus knew Sarah was in trouble .
The morning after she could smell the thing digging around the edges of the hut , Sarah decided she had to leave . The gap beneath the door was getting bigger and bigger . With no idea which direction to choose , she walked toward the highest peak . Sarah gathered the curved bit of stone which fit nicely into her palm along with a group of small rocks she planned on throwing at whatever might follow her . 8
