He pulled at the chain , but his body had become so weak since he was brought there , that while he believed he was pulling with all the strength he could muster , his arm barely lifted off the rough stony surface . He tried again , this time trying not to lift his whole arm , but rather just his hand ; he focused on curling his hand up at the wrist and had a little more luck . His fingertips brushed the iron shackle . It was hot after a day of sitting in the constant sunlight . How long have I been out ? Another small wave passed , and Giles felt his body floating on the surface .
Giles turned his head away from his left arm and looked up into the sky . He could not see the sun , but at least he knew it was still bright out . Why does that matter ? It will not make any difference in the end . He shook his head and tried to quiet his thoughts as he looked over to his right . The moment his eyes glanced at what lie next to him , they slammed shut , and he whipped his head back towards his left . It did him no good . The horrific image was already burned into his memory , or whatever was really left intact now . He told himself not to look again . He was suffering enough as it was , why should he only add to that misery ? His body betrayed him , and his thoughts felt useless as he felt his own head turning back toward the direction he now loathed .
Powerlessly , he argued with himself not to open his eyes . His head may be pointed that way , but …
