“ We aren ’ t running in wolf form ?” the young man asked as Maximus approached him .
“ We will be accompanied by witches . They can not fly for days at a time and horses can not keep up with us in wolf form .”
Maximus gestured , and the apprentice held out his hand with his palm facing upwards . Maximus gripped his wrist with one hand and drew the blade across his palm with the other . Blood trickled from his heartline and Maximus lowered his head and sucked at it until it stopped . When he raised his head , the apprentice was looking away . He wiped his mouth before taking hold of the young man ’ s chin to make him face him . Then he opened his mouth wide and breathed softly into his face . The apprentice blinked and shuddered , and then noticed his hand and winced . “ How did that happen ?” “ A little apprentice carelessness ,” Maximus assured him . “ Nothing more .”
