“But he did have a business card –”
“At the ready. As if he knew he’d need it.”
“You carry yours, though.”
“I know,” he relented, softening his tone. “But
somehow, this feels different.”
“Do you still have the card?”
Herald plunged his hand into his pants pocket and
retrieved Matthias’ business card, holding it up with two
fingers. The two stared into each other’s eyes.
“Are you thinking what I am?” Claire asked, her
eyes determined.
The corners of Herald’s mouth raised, and some
teeth peered from behind his lips. “I am now.”
As Herald plunged his hand once again into his
pants pocket, Dylan’s bedroom door flew open. Claire
jumped, letting out a squeal, and Herald froze.
I just stood there, watching, my eyes glancing
between the two.
“D-did… you n-need anything,” Claire managed
while catching her breath, “Doctor?”
“Something wrong? I hope I didn’t scare you.”
“Well… you did, actually.” Herald finally relaxed a
bit, taking deep breathes.
“My apologies. I didn’t expect you to be right
outside the door.”
“Any news?” Claire probed.
